The Basket of Sant’Ambrogio
The Basket of Sant’Ambrogio, funded by the Rural Development Program 2014/2020 of the Tuscany Region, is a research/action intervention aimed at enhancing the role of the Sant’Ambrogio Market as a prime location for the commercialization of quality local products, promoting the creation of added economic, social, and environmental value. The operational group involves both public and private actors: the agricultural companies Le Roncacce (lead partner), Il Cassero, Il Bello, the Butcher Shop Luca Menoni, the Consortium of Sant’Ambrogio Market Traders, and the Business Assistance Center of Coldiretti Toscana.
Project Objective
The project began with the purpose of establishing a network for small-scale organized distribution with short supply chains. It involves redefining urban markets and restoring their social value, based not only on reconnecting with the peri-urban rural reality but also on facilitating the reclaiming and redefining of urban spaces by the community. This project aims to overcome the process of “museification” that many historical centers, particularly Florence, have experienced in recent decades. It seeks to recreate the connection between producers and consumers, promoting new places and moments of interaction, and expanding the opportunities for enjoyment and visibility of the market and its surrounding spaces.
